I NEEDADVICE!! I am glad to find you guys. Can someone give advice? Our dear Napoleon is 11 yrs old and has developed a limp in his front legs. We had blood tests done and he is in great shape there. The vet put him on Deramaxx for pain but I'm not sure if it is safe or what else we might use. Anyone have suggestions? He is a GREAT old man and we just want him to be as happy and comfortable as he can be as he lives his life out as the champion of the neighborhood and lord over all. lol Seriously, he is such a great dog and I would appreciate any advice. Thanks!

I have a wonderful 5 month old pup, was rescued from southern Missouri by good intending young folks that thought they would keep two pups for watching live stock (sheep)&(horses). They were too much for them and my pup got put in the barn to live with the horses. He came to me frightened and cold, and full of parasites inside and out. Please give me any tips you may feel important, if you have the time ? I have worked with Police dogs as my partner,I am not a policeman anymore,I now have another GREAT PARTNER now, I want to make his life worth living again ''' Thank you for any help you may offer !!! HELP! This past weekend was the saddest weekend my daughter and I have ever had. I am looking for any comments or advise...Here's what happened!
My daughter has wanted a Great Pyreneese for years. Although I have heard the "stories" of puppies bought in pet stores...when seeing this beautiful 12 week pyr pup with badger markings on the face, I knew this was the dog for us. We already have a beagle and a toy poodle and I have raised dogs all my life...years ago breeding golden retrievers and later shetland sheep dogs, ect....
On day two, I noticed, Sebastian was limping...back right leg. We hired "Pet Pals" to come by once a day and check on the pup, feed, walk, ect...play with his brothers....Kristen then came home from school 3:30....in one week, he is almost crate trained, is taken commands, is learning how to interact with the smaller dominat dog. Simon the Great (poodle 10 pounds)
I made an appointment with out Vet for my first day off...this past Saturday our Vet told us that his limp is due to a "Varus Deformity" in his 2nd and 3rd digits on the back right paw....these two "toes", he does not use, they grew incorrectly and just flop around...visibly he limps and sometimes alot less if he uses the leg by trying to run with the other dogs, ect...he uses the back leg to go up the stairs but never to come down. Considering we only had a two week window to return the dog, I have relunctantly done so hoping and praying for more answers to this condition. He is a beautiful pyr pup with a great disposition, very patient and very smart...the vet is considered in the long run because this is a large breed dog....possible lameness or arthritis as a result of not fully using this back foot....
HAS ANYONE HEARD OF THIS OR SEEN THIS...COULD IT SELF CORRECT OR IT IS TOO LATE FOR THAT?
Yes, the pup came from a puppy mill I'm sure considering the owner is in Arkansas and the puppy was born in Missouri....if it's congential, that would mean from birthday or a calcium deficiency, or grew up too long in a crate, not walking on it, ect....the vet can't say if it is genetics or congenital but I am leaning to the latter because of the bad conditions some of these puppy mill breeders raise dogs in....
With more information, I will consider bringing Sebastian back home...the pet store charged 1000.00 for this pup...I lost hundreds of dollars already purchase in supplies, food, ect and this last week has been like a year.....if this pup can't come home, I am looking for another puppy....I certainly won't buy from this pet store again...the heartache is immense and we just can't put his crate away.
Thanks for the feedback!

Shepherd my 9 week old Pyr just had his offical homecoming this weekend. Shep has proudly accepted the assignment, not to ever try or want to replace his older brother, Travis who at 10 years of age said goodbye to us May 1, 2004.
I have a question for any of you more "breed experts". Travis, while born on a quarter horse ranch in Burleson Texas, was confined with his other litter mates to a professional breeders kennel environment. Certainly puppies received many times of supervised freedom from their housing.
Shepherd, also born on ranch, this one in South Irving. Fun for me as I was allowed to visit the ranch daily if desired and schedule permitted. Great experience...although hard to leave the other little guys as I bonded with each of them too. These puppies, unlike Travis, were originally sheltered in the goat fenced in area with dimensions of approximately 40 X 40 feet. But right around 4-5 weeks of age, the gates were opened and the puppies and mom had full access to the entire 116 acres.
In just the first day, I can already tell some of the difference in how Shepherd is initially adjusting. He tends to bite a little more, I think due to having 7 litter mates versus Travis only had 1 litter mate, a female. But also, in his anxiety to his crate. (bigger than Travis' 48ft long and at least 3 - 4 feet tall.) But he hasn't been even in a pen for 6 weeks, much less a crate.
His potty training is literally non existent...he has not had even one accident yet and is very sweet and loving. I just need to hear back from some of you as to if I am doing the right thing to continue to use crate for initial training. Believe me, the only time he is in the crate is if I have to leave for a quick errand.
How do I take some of the "ranch" out of my little guy or do I even need to.
Thanks look forward to joining your little group.

Last week we lost our 3 yr old female pyr, Bailey, to stomach bloat. She was fine when she went to bed at 10:00 and by 4:30am we had to rush her to the emergency clinic. They performed the surgery and her condition was so bad she didnt make it. It all happened so fast we couldnt believe it. Our 4 yr old male, Kegger, is lost without her. He wont eat, he mopes and wanders around looking for her. Any suggestions on how to help him through this hard time? Will he "snap out of it"? It breaks our hearts to see him looking so sad. Thanks for your help!

Ben our 6 year old GP was from an abusive home. We took him from a family that kept him on a 4 foot chain on their back porch. He is the most loving dog-man that we have ever had. He is attentive and watchful of my father who has Alzheimers and lives with us. He knows when dad is getting into something he shouldn't and alerts us; even watches over him at night. He is better than the baby monitor.

I have a 5 year old female spayed Pyr that was brought into our Rescue program because she had been attacking the family's other dog. In the three weeks she's been with us, she has attacked 4 other dogs without provacation and had acted threatening towards myself and my daugher. The rescue group is struggling with what to do with her, and may put her down. Does anyone out there have any ideas on if and how this behavior can be corrected? When she's good she's a sweetie, but when she's bad she's bad without any warning at all. Please help with any suggestions so she can be saved. Thanks

We have a 6 month old female Great Pyreneese named Bailey. We bought her to guard our 20 sheep and 7 goats on our 50 acres. She is doing a wonderful job, but I need some advice on her JUMPING!!! She jumps all over us when we enter the sheep pen, and it is becoming quite a problem now that she is getting so big!!! We are hoping that this is just the "puppy" in her and she will outgrow it, but in the meantime, does anyone have any advice on getting her to stay down?!?! Thanks!!!!

I have a 10 mo. old female Pyr in need of a good home. She is WONDERFUL inside and outside of the home. She does like to bark and protect her surroundings (more so in the daytime) and only outside. She is potty trained as well. She is wonderful with children and cats. I would love for someone to adopt her with a farm or some kind of land where she can roam and protect in that I think she would be wonderful with this. She is the sweetest thing ever. She would make a wonderful addition to your family!! Anyone interested? You may also email me at legaleagle704536@msn.com. I live in the Colorado Springs, CO area. Hannah's owner!!

It's always fun to read this site. I have 6 pyr's on our farm. One lives in the house with us. I received her back after a couple had her for 2 years and no longer could keep her. I had a different one in the house but she decided to kick her out. So my replacement female sleeps out on the deck or on our front step. My biggest baby that I had bottle feed, did crp on 3 times as a puppy, and after being hit by a combine 2 years ago, that paralyzed his back half and doing physical therapy 4 times a day for 6 weeks on him. I was able to get him to walk again in which no vet said he would, was killed in the line of duty by cyotes this spring. I miss him very much. Even though he couldn't wag his tail, his eyes and nugging would always tell me how happy he was to see you. Of course I had to order a little stone from abby press for him. I think my husband thinks I think more of the dogs than him. I agree that people in town need to learn about the breed. You can train them not to bark at night, it takes time. The Potty training comes with time and all of a sudden they will stop doing it in the house. I have had the same problem. I have trained a lot of them. I love my Pry's. Some nights are trying when I'm trying to sleep but when they are on a rampage I know I need to go check things out because it means that there is some wrong and sure enough there is.

Help! My only male(neutered) pyr is attacking and killing my new boer goat kids! we've had him for 1.5 years. He has not shown any aggression toward any goats before except toward newborn kids, which I intercepted with no incident. This only happened once about six months ago. Yesterday whenI came home I found a doe which had kidded twins, and one of the kids was litterally decapitated and missing limbs. The pyr did it as witnessed by neighbors, but they were too afraid to do something. The dog has been moved to the buck pen, but I'm heartsick! Is there any rehabilitation, or is it hopeless. He's a great dog in every other way, even to our 6 year old Down's Syndrome boy.I now have a doe/kid pasture without a good protector.Has anyone heard of this sudden aggression towards newborn kids? Help!

STILL NEED HELP!!! I have had my male Pyr for a month now and he is still using the bathroom in the house. I have him in a routine and it is not helping. He is being crate trained and he does not potty in his crate. Weekends are really bad. This past Saturday, he used the bathroom 14 times in the house! He does not sniff around or look like he needs to go out, he just walks around and all of sudden starts using the bathroom. I take him out at 5:30am from his crate, I walk him, play with him, feed him, take him out again, play with him, and then put him up. When I get home from work, I take him out, play with him, walk him, play, play, play, take him out, but he still uses the bathroom in the house. ANY HELP??????

This is a wonderfull place to come and come again! Bravo to the PyrNet team for a highly informative an fun site on Pyrs. Zacky, our 10 months old Pyr comes from a good breeder. We experienced some shewing and/or other "problems" now and there but Zacky is a fast learning guy! He is the star of the little dead-end street where our house is. Among a dozen houses, more than half have one or several dogs as residents. One house has 4 dogs, all of them rescued from previous really bad owners or shelters. A great environment for socializing...
Again thanks for sharing your love and expertise about Pyrs.

I haven't been to the site in some time. We have two Great Pyrenees, one from a farm where his parents guarded livestock, and we rescued the female from a home in which she was left outside with little human attention in a residential neighborhood. She required plenty of clean-up and medical attention, as well as some behavioral training to work on her barking(mostly controlling the environment and introducing acknowledging voice and hand gestures so she knew we were aware of her warning).
So many posts on this site clearly show that the humans who brought the Great Pyrenees into their lives did not do their homework on the breed. As adults, these dogs are very large, very intelligent and expressive, bred to think independently, to warn and to guard. They are also very loyal and loving when humans understand their nature and work with it rather than demand the dogs be different than they were bred to be.

PLEASE HELP!!!!! We bought our first Pir this past Feb. She is now 8 months old. Her name is Hannah!! I love her to death and she is the sweetest thing ever, but I am having a REAL problem with her barking. I have a huge fenced back yard with a lot of landscaping so she has plenty of room to play, etc. She also has a companion back there (my pit if you can believe that) Unfortunately I have had to try a shock collar which worked for a couple weeks but not now. I do not want to do a muzzle b/c of the panting drinking water, etc. I am going crazy with the barking and I am sur my neighbrs are too. She seems to listen to my husband by voice but pretty much laughs at me when I scold her. Is there anything else we can try???? I am afraid we wil have tp put her up for adoption if she does not stop - I cannot keep her in the house ALL THE TIME, especially since I am expecting my second child in November. PLEASE PLEASE HELP!!

How often should a pyrennes puppy (8 wks) be fed? I want to feed regularly such as morning and evening rather than let food out to get her outside for bowel movements after each feeding to avoid them in the house. Other than that Daphne is a wonderful dog and we are glad we got her.

NEED ADVICE / HELP!!! We have an 8 week old male pyr and he is the greatest puppy ever! I signed this guest book a week ago about growling and got some responses that really helped. Thank you! Now, I would like some advice on house breaking him. I have done research on Pyr's for a year and have always read how easy they are to house break. I guess our Pyr is special, b/c he is not easy to house break. We have a routine going for him, which he does really well with, but it's the in-between the routine he has problems with. It is also difficult to "read" him when he needs to potty. He can be walking down the hall and all of a sudden, he starts using the bathroom! When he does it almost 6 times in a one hour time span, it starts to get frustrating. After he goes outside we always give him a treat. He has even learned to sit and shake before he gets his treats. Very smart, just needs a little help with the house breaking part. Thanks for your help!!!

My husband and I just bought a 7 week old Pyr and he is the cutest "little" thing. We have a 16 week old white lab in the house along with a white Himilayan cat. I have researched Pyr's for almost a year and have always read how great their temperment is. The other night both dogs were playing with one bone (taking it away from each other and tug-o-war, etc.) and at one point the Pyr growled really mean to the lab. Also, one more when "fussing" at the two for chewing on a plant, the Pyr growled at my husband. Is this normal? What can we do to control this growling and not be afraid he is going to bite one of us or the other animals. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Saturday August 14th was the worst day of my life. I had to bury my best friend Lily. She was only 5 years old. Cause of death is unknown. I couldn't financially afford to have her examined to determine how she died. How does a healthy 5 year old dog go from being fine to dead in 12 hours??? Something is missing from my life. It feels strange to not see those big brown eyes when I return from work everday. What a horrible experience to come home from picking up my 3 daughters & finding her dead. I had to diga grave large enough for a human being. We placed lillies on her before we burried her. My kids painted the large rock I found while digging her grave. They wrote her name, date of birth, & day of death on it. It now is her tombstone. It's been almost 2 weeks & I still feel like I'm dreaming. All of you please go & give your Pyr a big hug for me & my girls & think of Lily. You will regret it when its too late.

We adopted what we think is almost surely a purebred GP recently.(sure looks like one) We have always had samoyeds. "Sweetie," is somewhere between 1 and 2 years old by the looks of her teeth. The humane society said that she was dropped off into a no questions asked kennel during the night so we have no info. She exhibits some behavior that indicates that she was possibly beaten. She loves us, but is very nervous around strangers especially men, and small children. She has snapped at my three small neices and nephews four times. Any one have any suggestions as how to help her learn to trust men again? She is very anxious when a man has anything in his hand such as a walking stick or fishing pole. We love her, but are not looking forward to keeping her isolated from every strange man and small child she comes in contact with for the rest of her life time. We are doing obedience class, she is fine with women, and most men, but since we can not be sure how she will react with some men and small children we feel compelled to keep her away from them until we come up with a solution. This is inconvenient because, we live next door to the kids and are used to having unlimited visiting back and forth with them and this is cramping our family visits. We are not the type of people to give up on "Sweetie," so any advice would help.

We are the proud owners of a 3-year-old female Pyr. We could not have asked for a better addition to our family of 2 cats! We got her when she was 8 weeks old and weighed 5 pounds; she now weighs 85 pounds. She has also been great to train! Valedictorian of her classes!! Calm, gentle, loving and protective of us. She is an inside dog; we had very little trouble house-breaking her. This year we had her trimmed; it has helped immensely with the shedding (which is my only complaint). We are thinking of getting another one next year; we can't bear to think of life without her! What a great companion!

I have been fortunate to have owned seven pyrs since 1985.I got our 1st one when my children were 6 & 4 yrs. old. Ivan worked cattle with me & guarded the children & the chickens
Ivan saved a man's life against a 2300 lb. bull and put himself between a new puppy and a stampede of cattle, no harm to him. He went with me to the cattle lease & kept the cattle at bay while I poured out feed. He found our lost newborn calves when I couldn't find them on horseback. He followed me on the tractor or me and/or the kids on horseback. because of him I have had six more pyrs. My new one Anna has made a great house dog and companion. I am expecting grandchildren soon & can't wait to introduce Anna (5mos) and Silver to them.I rescued Silver from an abusive owner 3 yrs. ago. He has never been agressive towards me, children or strangers even though I saw him bite his owner. He is my outside pyr, that comes in the house sometimes. He is very social on outings to the beach and parks, making a point to greet every child we meet. These pyrs are such gentle giants. They are great with children. They do dig huge pits to stay cool, so they are best suited for the country unless you don't mind the dog digging up your whole yard. They can be raised in the house if someone is usually home. Keep lots of rawhide (large) bones and lots of toys in a basket.Don't leave anything out that you want to keep (shoes, etc.) they assume anything left out is their toy. I have had a lot of experience with pyrs. I can probably answer any questions you might have. Find out all about pyrs and talk to other owners before getting one. They are the most beautiful puppies in the world, but remember they grow to be very large and need a lot of attention to grooming.

We have acquired a GP to replace our aging Anatolian Shepherd to used as a guardian for our sheep. The only problem is that the GP has never made it outside as we have enjoyed him too much in the house. He is housebroken and learning basic obedience commands very quickly. I would like some advice from anyone regarding how much shedding is typical and how is it controlled; at this point he is not a barker, when does this start; any other suggestions for maintaining a Pyr in the house. I adopted a 5 year old female Pyranese last week. She is very sweet and mellow. I am struggling with housetraining also and would appreciate suggestions. Also, should Pyranese be groomed or shaved for the summer? She is mainly in the house and I worry about her getting too hot.

We just adopted a 2 year old Pyr from the vet on Friday. We have given her a bath and have been brushing her all weekend. Still alot of mats in the back end. We have found alot of ticks some huge and ready to fall off. She doesnt seem to mind at all but I am starting to wonder if we will ever get all of the ticks off and hair brushed out. She seems to have been an inside dog and well housebroken. but the ticks have left sores on her skin. Any suggestions We would appreciate. Thank you

8 week old male pyr puppy. Have only had him one week. He gets along great with our corgi, but we found out last Monday our corgi has hip dysplasha in both hips. I would prefer at this time to only have one dog. Since we just got him. I feel this is the best time to find him a home. He is the cutest little guy and has been working on his housebreaking. We keep our dog in doors so he has been spoiled. My Name is Peggy e-mail me with any questions. He's up to date on shots and has had complete pup check up

A neighbor has abandoned a Gr. pyr. with me asking me to find a home for him. Sam is 1 1/2 years old. His owner went into the Navy and asked me to relocate the dog. He is alert friendly and house broken. He sits and walks well on the leash. I cannot keep him. I already have a dog and there is not enough space for two animals here. It would be helpful if anybody could find a place to take Sam in.

If anyone is interested in adopting a 3-year old male Pyr named Shemya, please contact me at the above email address. He is our beloved family pet that needs to find a new home. We tried once before, but decided to keep him..however it is not working out. My son has asthma and our house is just too small (and he is big!). My wife has just gone back to work and he is home alone all day..he's very well behaved, mild mannered and sweet. He is an indoor dog that needs an air conditioned house and a fenced yard. He's also the most loveable dog anyone could want...people who have 'baby-sitted' him have loved him....however he must find a new home. Contact me for more details and information. Would *prefer* a former Pyr owner, and would like for him to stay in the Georgia area, but not necessary for the right family. Thank you-we are in the Marietta/Atlanta/West Cobb area.

I purchased a Great Pyr when he was 5 weeks old. I'm having a hard time with housebreaking him. He goes outside to defecate but he wants to pee in the house. I take him out on a regular schedule and he pees when he goes out, but then he pees in the house every chance he gets. Does anyone have any ideas on what I need to do? Also, he wants to bite on me all of the time. I know a puppy is going to chew, but how do I keep him from chewing on me?

I can't believe that I am even considering finding my darling three and a half year old female Pyrenees another home. But she has become food aggressive towards other dogs and I was told that she would do better in a one dog household. We just completed an advance obedience class today. It had been my hope this would help me to have more control over her. She is very well behaved. Obeys all commands except "come" at times. Welcomes any and all visitors. Adores us and our grandchildren. She is great around our horses, chickens, ducks, cats. We have used a boundary collars on her, which she respects, but does have a history of breaking through it. I would only consider giving her up to a home which has had this breed before and can prove to me that they would include her into their household and have acreage and adequate fencing. She is completely housebroken and uses a dog door. She has always been treated as a family pet not strickly as a guardian dog and always sleeps indoors. She does bark but not excessively. She is magnificent, very loving and deserves a family that appreciates her.

I have a female and a male pyreneese. They just had puppies. She had 4 white, 1 tan and 3 black with white paws. Can this be? My husband saw the male get with her and I marked it on the calander. On the day she was to deliver, she did. They are both kept in a filed with our goats (66) that has an electric fence around it. She will not come out and we have to literally drag her to the vehicle to take her to the vet. We have not seen any other dog around our area that is black and male. I called the vet and he told me he didn't know enough about pyreneese to tell me, but we could do a blood test. The mother would up laying on three of the white ones and they died. That left 3 black, 1 tan and 1 white. I decided not to do the blood test, and just gave the other puppys away to neighbors and friends. After I gave them away, a friend got on the internet and found a web site that showed a picture of a man and woman who raised black pyreneese dogs. The article said they were very rare, but that there was such a dog. I cannot find the web site and she forgot to print it off. Does anyone know if this can be correct. I would appreciate any input.

HELP, my neighbor is very annoyed because she says that my Great Pyrenes (Abby) howls--not barks. Abby is an inside dog. She is outside daily for walks and to take care of business. She had heart worms when I adopted her and she survived the treatment, hence she bacame an inside dog. When she is out, she is enclosed in my wooden fence backyard. I have never heard her howl. She does bark, but she has never howled. Does anyone have a G.P. that howls like a hound dog? Do you know of any articles that speak about G.P.'s possessing the proclivity to howl? I have not run across any in the net. Thanks for the assist.

My mother has fallen in love with the Great Pyrenees breed and we are looking for one for Mother's Day. If you have one to sell or give away, please email me. We'd like one preferably at least 6 months to a year old as my parents are older and a baby puppy would be too much to contend with. They live in the country so the dog would have plenty of room and my mother LOVES dogs so he'd be well taken care of. Thanks!

I am looking to place a female GP. She is an extremely patient dog, Recently one of the neighbors dogs slipped his leash to go see her and the owner beat her with a tree branch thinking that she would run away. She claims that our dog attacked her and that if she every sees her again she will run her over with her car. She has already made on attempt. "Crackers has never shown any sighs of aggression, in fact, she has 11 granchildren she loves to roll around and play with. Please, if some one is looking to give a GP a great home, send them our way. Crackers is purebred with papers and I can send photos of her to anyone interested. I totaly agree as would any good Pyr owner or even breeder that yard size is not always an issue as long as your bringing your Pyr for at least a short daily walk. Both my Pyrs. are happily kept in a dog pen 100'X 100', and although overjoyed to go for their daily walk it's more for craving my companionship rather then for lack of space. If your trying to decide wether it's cruel to keep your Pyr. enclosed in a smaller space try to think of how cruel it is to seperate a Pyr. from what it loves most in life...his/her human best friend ! Remember that although the Pyr. is undoubtedly a giant breed it's slow metabolism doesn't require a giant amount of exercise.

We have 2 Great Pyrs a male 4 years and a female 3 years old. They are wonderful and I cannot image having any other breed. I guess I would just like to say that the size of yard is not always an issue. We have a fenced in yard that is not all that big, but we give our dogs a walk daily for exercise and they do just fine. Could not image giving them up because my yard was a little small. Just something to think about if you feel that yard size is an issue.

I need help with my 1st baby, Brandy, her and I have been together for 2yrs. now and last year we have to seprate for now going on 10mos, I lost my home on the Westside and it had a large back yard, well I moved into a smaller place and she couldn't come with me, at that time.
My guestion is would it be a bad thing for me to bring her home now, since she has had a larger place in these last 10mos to roam and play with others dogs. I miss her so much that I go and see her on weekends and everytime I go there she sees me coming down the road and when I stop the car she knows me and she starts to cry, cry, and cry, I pet her and tell her that I love her and one day I will try to bring her home with me. Do you think she will be ok if I do this and spend lost of time reinterducing her to this smaller place. Please help me with this delema.
Plese write back as soon as you can on this cruching problem I have. I love my Brandy. Thank You.

That breed of dog is so beautiful and majestic, some day I will have another pyr. I love to talk about pyr, and I love to learn even more pyr. If you have any suggestion about anything, like feeding or anything, write to me.

I have two adult pyreneese, male & female that came to my house as strays and no one has claimed them even after putting an ad in the paper. My Shar-Pei dogs do not want them in their yard but I don't have the heart to just turn them loose or over to the animal shelter. My husband and I just got our 4 kids a 8wk. old Pyr. today!!! Everything we have read and researched on the breed has been postive. We know they are very protective but gentle. My father just offer opinions of concern stating that he knows someone with pyrenees dogs and that this person say they get mean. Also says that they cannot be allowed run to free, nor can they be allowed around our kids friends at birthday parties due to safety reasons. These comments are completely opposite of what we've been told by breeders and other owners of the breed. If several of you could e-mail us and give us some clearer picture of the breed and care we would definetely appreciate it. We do not want to chain him up nor do we have a fenced in yard, it's 4 acres! plus 80acres farmland. Please mail with any info possible. Thanks in advance!!!!!!

I got my pyr "dolly" in april from someone who never had a big dog before. they did not have much of a yard so they kept her caages for most of the day & night. she is 2 years old now & is the light of my life. she loves to run around our huge fenced yard & she even plays fetch! i have never had a dog with more personality. she can be quite a handful sometimes because she is so mischevious but that is part of what we love about her.

Your web site is wonderful! We lost our Pyr, Cali, a little over a year ago. She was a show dog we rescued from breeders when she was three. She was the most wonderfully gentle and loving dog that I have ever known. We adopted her because of a Pyr mix we had before her that was also deeply loved and appreciated. We are now looking for our third Pyr puppy, specifically a female. We do not mind if she is a mix our pure breed. Our first was a white shepard mixed with a Pyr, what a dog! Our second was full breed, she was amazing too! If any one has or knows of any puppies please let us know at gia@leedg.com.
Thank you.

It is truly amazing how protective he is .We were walking in and isolated area and the noise that sounded seemed like a falling tree .He put himself between me and the sound until we figured out it was a flock of Tukey Buzzards taking off at one time. Everyday he amazes me with his nature. What age do you recommend for neutering this breed?

Hi..We are the new owners of a female PYR. She is now 4 months old. We have a small herd of goats that we want her to guard but aren't having a lot of luck with the training. When she is with the goats all she is interested in doing in jumping at them & then running them. Any suggestions on training would be appreciated. We have many books on the breed but none that go into specifics with the training of a livestock PYR. Right now anytime she is around the goats we have to keep her on a leash. We love this site and hope to get feed back on this topic and any other helpful info. on her breed. Thank You :)

Let me tell you about Rudy - our 2 year old. He is the finest, smartest, most regal animal one could ever imagine. Although he has had no formal training whatsoever, he recognizes and obeys many commands. He displays this obedience for one reason - he receives nothing but unconditional love and attention from us; my wife and I. We were blessed with him as a pup at 10 weeks old, from probably one of the finest breeders in the West; Sunburst Kennels in Scottsdale, AZ. Mary Anne chose our pup for us, to suit OUR personality, we had nothing to say in the matter. But rest assured, we received a puppy who has brought nothing but joy to us both. Now, at 2 years old, Rudy is our best friend and faithful companion. We named him Rudy because he was the 12th of 12 puppies, weighing only 1 pound at birth. His strength was so little that he could not nurse on his own, so MaryAnn bottle fed him the entire time he was to nurse. Hence, Rudy, the runt, as in the movie of the Notre Dame football player who played only one play in his entire tenure at college. But Rudy is unmistakeable a champion - a champion in our daily lives, in our fondest wishes for our life and his, and in our house and home. God bless the Great Pyrenees - they keep us safe from the bears and coyotes, and the soothe our souls.
Best to you and your Pyr's.

Can someone recommend a first class training book or video for Great Pyranees? I especially want to train our new pup to do his "business" only at a designated site, or sites. We have bike and hiking trails crisscrossing our land and it is very annoying when dogs "drop their load" right in front of people on the trails. ROVER is a cute little guy, only 8 weeks old and ready to train. Thanks for your help.

Hi, I have read some of the notes left by various Pyr owners. I currently own 4 Pyreenes and have to say I am the biggest fan. Our dogs are the working type and live with our stock of 200+ head of cows and sheep 24/7. To those that own Pyrs they are a very indepandent breed and generally do not train like a lab or others. Their hearts are with live stock and vast amounts of land. Our dogs can travel as many as 10 miles aday. If bonded at the puppy stage they can be hands down the best childs dog ever. It is my hope that who ever decides to own this breed truly understand who they realy are. They are not a town dog and fetch is not their game of choice. It is unlikely that you will teach the average Pyr that game. But they will love you till the day they die and will protect your children and stock unconditionally. We have owned and lost many a Pyr over the years on our ranch and all our "kids" lived their days roaming our ranch, cuddling a cold lamb or licking a new born calf. They were born with the stock and they died with them. They are Gods little fighters. Please carefully consider your life before owning a Pyr. They are not for everyone.

Hello,
We have just bought a beautiful 12 week old PYR girl for my dad to help protect his goat herd. She had already been out in the pasture with her mom and dad who were livestock dogs before we bought her. The problem since she has gone to live with my mom & dad is she doesn't want my dad to leave her at all. She also runs the goats who have already been traumatized by wild dogs. Thus the reason we decided to buy my dad the PYR. My dad is spending every waking minute out in the yard with her but the main problem is when he comes inside for anything she jumps over a fence and runs up to the backdoor. He really has lots of questions on how to stop her from doing this. I would love to go online and post this question but couldn't figure out how to do it. If you would please write me back to inform me how to ask questions to your PYR lovers I would appreciate it so much.
Thank You,
Angela Farthing

I found your site and thoroughly loved the pictures of everyones dogs. I had to have my male pyr put down on Oct. 21 because of bone cancer. It had spread thru his body. I very much miss him. He was my gentle giant. Always very well behaved. He was 10 years old. He loved to go for long walks. I just recently picked up a female from some people who bought her and thought she was just to large. I am glad I found her for she was in bad shape when I got her. She has been to the vet several times now and is doing well. She is well behaved and very smart. Her name is Angel. She was my gift since my Burley had to go. Merry Christmas.

Hi, we just added a ten month old Pyr. to our family. We absolutely love him. However, I need to find a book (advise) specific to training Great Pyrenees. We have done some research on trainers but have recognized that many good trainers may not know the unique behaviors of the Great Pyr. Specifically: bed wetting (mine), excessive barking (only when outside, he spends most of the time 97% inside with the family). I am aware that some barking is natural.

I love the breed of the Great Pyrenees. I found one that was stranded in my backyard, and because of the information, I found out what breed he was.

I have a wonderful 6 yr. old AKC male (neutered). He is the biggest, fluffy, puppy of a dog that you have ever met.
I need to find a new home for him. My yard is way too small for him. Seriously, he is the coolest dog. He just needs (deserves) some room to roam.
I would be more than happy to help with shipping/moving costs if necessary. I just want him to have a happy, loving home.

I adopted a Pyr from our local shelter, she is around 2 years old. Obviously she had been abused, and had no social skills. While I am with her she is fine with other people. If I go away for a couple of days and ask a friend to come and feed her she growls at them, and they are afraid of her. How can I get her to accept others when I am away?
